Maternal mortality surveillance
The ItOss (Sorveglianza obstetrica) project of the ISS includes a maternal mortality surveillance system that includes data from 15 regions, including Apulia, and 2 autonomous provinces with a coverage of 94.7% of births in Italy (in 2019).
The objective of the surveillance is the detection, through the combination of several health sources, of deaths in pregnancy or in the 365 days following its termination in order to produce reliable estimates of maternal mortality, identify the main determinants and initiate public health interventions aimed at improving the quality of the birth pathway and preventing avoidable deaths.
