CeRBA

CeRBA is the Regional Experimental Center for Breath Analysis (Centro sperimentale regionale di Breath Analysis), established by a Memorandum of Understanding between AReSS, University of Bari and IRCCS Giovanni Paolo II Cancer Institute (DGR No. 40 of 2019). The Center deals with the development of breath tests for the early diagnosis of chronic diseases and cancer. To do so, it integrates multidisciplinary expertise: chemical-analytical, medical, biochemical and statistical.

Breath Analysis is based on the principle that there are organic compounds in the human exhale that say a lot about a person's health status. In fact, they make it possible to identify individual elements (markers) and associate mixtures of metabolites (patterns) with certain diseases. Moreover, by integrating the different analytical instrumentation and the subsequent statistical interpretation of the data, it is also possible to learn about the metabolic pathways that lead to the transition from a physiological to a pathological state.

The advantage of this innovative methodology is the possibility of obtaining diagnoses quickly, with lower costs and less invasive tests for individuals, in accordance with the World Health Organization Guidelines.
